column

New column up at the Harlan Daily. It's about everything I know about meeting women. Clearly, it's a very short column

Excellent column! I learned a lot... and it really makes a lot of sense. (cue corny commercial music) Thanks Patch! (big corny smile, and a thumbs up)

Thanks Scott. Remember to only use what you learned for good and never evil.

Great wisdom from a great man. I can't believe you are giving them these great articles for the pittance they are paying you. This is gold Patrick, GOLD! But seriously i liked the article a lot.

Was that "seriously" meant to indicate that everything before that had been a joke? Because I was totally buying it.

well more of a razzing. I dont know what razzing means but if it is what I think it means then that is what I meant.

Do you ever get emails from readers or does all your feedback come from us on your blog?

Razzing means something dirty, I think.

I occasionally get emails from readers in Harlan. Usually marriage proposals or death threats. There is no middle ground.

i couldn't get to it. what's the web page again?

It's harlandaily.com, but there's also a link over in my sidebar titled "patchwork."

Yup, I think we are on the same page of what razzing means then.

Wait, so was mine more of a marriage proposal or a death threat? I mean just because I may have blogged about how I intellectually crushed on you? or just because upon visiting my site you were threatened by a well-loved crossdresser? I mean maybe you should be a little nicer to your Harlan fans, or I could make them turn on you- and then only your body, once spliced into many parts and placed in a cooler, after of course having been wed by force, would visit Harlan. (to which, for those of you who don't know, he has never been).

Your's was the exception that proves the rule. It was the middle ground between marriage proposal and death threat.

Which, while I'm on the subject, I've never understood the concept of an exception proving a rule. Little help, anyone?

just because Im a dork, and you took back your previous insult...

The true origin of the phrase lies in a medieval Latin legal principle: exceptio probat regulam in casibus non exceptis, which may be translated as “the exception confirms the rule in the cases not excepted”-
Let us say that you drive down a street somewhere and find a notice which says “Parking prohibited on Sundays”. You may reasonably infer from this that parking is allowed on the other six days of the week. A sign on a museum door which says “Entry free today” leads to the implication that entry is not free on other days (unless it’s a marketing ploy like the never-ending sales that some stores have, but let’s not get sidetracked). H W Fowler gave an example from his wartime experience: “Special leave is given for men to be out of barracks tonight until 11pm”, which implies a rule that in other cases men must be in barracks before that time. So, in its strict sense, the principle is arguing that the existence of an allowed exception to a rule reaffirms the existence of the rule.
for more info, click on my name above and it will bring you to the full explanation

If that's the explanation, then I think most people use that phrase incorrectly.

most people use the entire english language incorrectly. (often including me)

I unagree.
