in which patch talks about his favorite comic/soon to be a movie
My favorite thing to come out of any comic publisher this year was a three issue mini-series called WE3. Here's how it's publisher, DC Comics, describes it:"The Incredible Journey meets The Terminator in WE3 — a heartbreaking animal adventure like no other. The eagerly awaited reunion of the white-hot team of Grant Morrison (JLA, New X-Men) and Frank Quitely (THE AUTHORITY, New X-Men), WE3 is their most ambitious collaboration yet — their own unique attempt to create a 'Western manga'.
In this wild adventure, the government has spent millions to fuse the firepower of a battalion with the nervous systems of a dog named Bandit, a cat named Tinker, and a rabbit named Pirate. As part of a program to replace human soldiers with expendable animals, the U.S. government has transformed three ordinary pets into the ultimate killing machines.
But now, those three animals have seized the chance to make a last, desperate run for 'Home'. A run that will turn into a breathless hunt to the death against the might of the entire military/industrial complex."
It was one of the best written and illustrated books I've ever held in my hands. You can preview a pdf of it here or buy it, in trade form, here. This morning, Variety announced that WE3 has been optioned by Newline Cinemas. I usually don't get that excited about comic book movies. Some stories just work better on the page, you know? Just because it was a good comic, that doesn't mean it would make a good movie. WE3, however, I think has the potential to be both. It has a really dark Disney-esque vibe that I think would be really fun to see on the big screen. Of course, just because an idea gets optioned that doesn't mean it'll ever even make it to the production phase. Just in case it does, though, you should buy a copy of WE3 now. That way if it ever becomes a film you can tell people how you knew about it back when it was just some comic nobody'd ever heard of. Then just think of all the street cred you'll have!
It should be noted that the dog in the story looks like BP's dog, Farley.
And the cat looks like every stupid cat I've ever seen.
God, I hate cats.
I hate cats too. They are worthless.
As for Farley...I have never forgiven him for chewing up BPs Nintendo 64 controllers when we went to Radford.
My comics arrived in the mail today!!!
I can hear Farley now, "Why don't you shut up, f'er?"
I really don't think street cred and comic books should be in the same sentence Patch.
I just read the WE3 yesterday night, and though it might have been a combination of alcohol and fatigue, I almost cried a little bit. Plus the design was amazing. That first double page with all the bullets....I sat with my jaw dropped for a couple minutes.
The whole book is phenomenal, but yeah, that two page sread with the bullets is really cool. So was the opening sequence leading up to it. And the bit with the rats on the bridge. I love this book.
