Best of 2005 - media
Favorite music of 2005
-Black Sheep Boy - Okkervil River
Thanks to Ian and Sara for turning me onto my new favorite band ever. Seeing them live in Louisville in a club the size of my living room was the musical highlight of my year.
-Apologies to The Queen - Wolf Parade
My first pass at this album kind of disappointed me. I gave it another go one night while I was sitting at home writing and fell in love with it.
Favorite book(I don't think I read anything published in 2005, so I'll go with my favorite book I read this year)
-Never Mind The Pollacks - Neal Pollack
Incredibly quick read once you get the cadence down. Funny book. Funny guy.
Favorite Comic Book
-Allstar Superman #1
I love Superman. I love Grant Morrison (the writer) and Frank Quitely (the artist). There's no way I couldn't love this book. I look forward to the rest of the series.
Favorite Movie
-Walk The Line
I didn't love it as much as I wanted to. I liked how honest it seemed to be about what a screw-up Cash was in his early life. I heard someone complain that it didn't make him seem like enough of a badass. I understand that sentiment because as a fan of Cash, it's easy to get enamored with his legend. I don't think that would have been nearly as valuable a movie, though.
-Derailed
I know, I know. I honestly didn't see the twists coming, though. Also, points for making me feel genuinely uneasy there at the beginning.
Favorite Television
-Scrubs
I've talked about my love for Scrubs a lot, and I'm aware of it's weaknesses and how formulaic it is. Sorry, though, I still love it.
-The Office
I know, I know, everybody says the British version is better. Shut up. I don't care. I love the American version. It uses Steve Corell so much more effectively than 40 Year Old Virgin did. It's easily the funniest show on television.
-Boston Legal
I don't stop smiling when this show is on. It's funny, it's smart, It's got a lot of heart. Yeah, it gets preachy at times, but that's a small price to pay, I think.
Favorite Radio
-Dave Ramsey
Ask Sara. I talk about Dave Ramsey all the time. I'm sure she's sick of it. But beside being a great place for financial advice, it's entertaining and inspiring to listen to. It's more valuable than anything else on this list because it actually teaches you how to change your life.
-Fanboy Radio
Comic book focused radio. Why wouldn't I love it?
