local stupidity

It's unbelievable to me the things that are newsworthy here in Lexington, Ky. For the past few weeks, our local news has been abuzz with stories about some area churches not having services on Christmas morning since it falls on a Sunday this year. Apparently a handful of ministers from churches that are having services have been giving the local media a plethora of sound bytes, like, "If you give the devil a ride, pretty soon he'll be driving." Ridiculous. Some national papers and news programs are even beginning to pick up the story.

My church isn't having services. I've spoken with our senior pastor about it twice now. He sees the whole thing as kind of humorous I think.

I think it's funny but I also think it's petty and stupid. Christianity has always been plagued by fundamentalist and legalist, people who think spirituality can be measured through precise actions and ritual. These people think the only appropriate expression of love for God is to sit in a church and listen to a sermon. I'd argue that spending time with family and friends, giving to others, and letting ministers have a Holiday off are also appropriate expressions of love for God. I'd also argue that most of the demagoging for reporters by local reverends serves a purpose other than calling us heathens to righteousness. But you know me, I'm kind of cynical.

My church is having three Christmas Eve services that will probably see 3000 people come through our building and hopefully leave blessed and encouraged. If we had a Christmas Day service we probably wouldn't break 1000. You tell me what the right thing to do is.

all i will say is that "church" is not a building, it's a "body." church can be with 1000, 3000, or 2 people in a church building or a wal-mart.
either way i will probably be asleep.

And church isn't a day of the week either. So choosing to reach 3000 people on Saturday as oppossed to 1000 people on Sunday seeems like good thinking to me.

And you won't be asleep because I'm coming over to your house in a Santa suit and waking your ass up.

what does santa like with his morning beer? some froot loops? some more live okkervil river or maybe my morning jacket? or should i stick to the cookies?

If you have some more live Okkervil River, I'll take it. And some cookies.

being a heathen i think that by not having a service on Sunday is an antrocity that will lead to all who dont attend to eternal damnation.

It's back to the burning stake with you, heathen.

It's so simple!

and yet so often overlooked.

you put it nice a neat Patrick. I didn't keep mine local though. It is on national news as well...if you havnt read my post, you might enjoy it as well :)

I'll check it out.
