childhood revisited
I was screwing around on the internet today (looking for pictures of Markie Post's feet or something probably) and I stumbled across a site dedicated to GI Joe toys. Not the big girly doll ones that you could dress up like a Barbie, but the little plastic ones.
These were my favorite toys when I was a kid, aside from my Super Powers action figures. The Super Powers action figures won out because I was such a nerd. When I played with my GI Joe figures they were very rarely GI Joe characters. Usually I'd make up my own names for them and create some other story around them.
Anyway, it got me to thinking about the action figures I loved as a kid and I decided to ride the wave of nostalgia. Here are some of my favorite action figures and accessories from when I was a kid. Feel free to chime in.
The GI Joe Ram Cycle. This thing is still bad-ass looking today.
The GI Joe Vamp Jeep. Also totally bad-ass. I wish I had a life-size version with working guns.
Quick Kick was one of my favorite GI Joe figures. I used to read this comic book called Master of Kung Fu. I'd read an issue and then have Quick Kick pretty much act out whatever had happened in the story. I wasn't a very imaginative child.
My other favorite GI Joe figure was Spirit. He had ponytails, a little skirt, a pet eagle and gun that shot arrow heads. what's not to love?
Besides playing with GI Joes I was also into Masters Of The Universe. Not as much as Aquaman, though. That kid is hot for He-Man.
I really loved Battle Cat. He's such a great idea. I'm surprised nobody in the real world has thought of putting armor on a tiger and riding it around town. If I had some armor and a tiger I would. Hell, if I had some armor I'd put it on a dog and ride it around town.
I also loved Castle Grayskull. My parents still have my Castle Grayskull out in their garage and my nephews play with it. It makes me jealous.
I also liked Ram Man. I wish I had his helmut and springy legs. I'd ram the crap out of stuff, like old cars, trash cans, and loneliness. Yeah.
I also had some Transformers but wasn't as into them.
My favorites were the Dinobots. I used to make my GI Joe guys ride around on them. I couldn't do anything right.
Soundwave was also cool. He was a robot that could turn into a boom box that was bigger than a car. There were also these cassette tapes that turned into robots that you could put in his chest plate. I don't remember the circumstances around it, but the cassette robots I had were some kind of cheap Mexican knockoffs instead of the real things.
Before GI Joe, Masters Of The Universe and Transformers, though, there was Star Wars. I had the coolest Star Wars playset ever:
Dagobah! The best part was the little mud pit that characters could disappear into. Awesome.
My favorite toys though, like I said, were my Super Power figures. The coolest were:
Green Lantern
Martian Manhunter
Hawkman
and Dr. Fate.
I also used to love Lex Luthor's Lex Soar 7.
And the Justice League playset.
Thanks to these toys and a lot more I was a sickly, pasty child who never went outside and didn't have any friends. Hard to believe that looking at the suave, well-liked, handsome lady's man that I am today, huh?
file under: nerd
Talk about a trip down memory lane. I have most of these toys in my parents attic. I have to make a trip up to their house and see what I can salvage. Hopefully I can find my Justice League figures. I'll bring them to MWK2 and you can be Green Lantern.
SUH-WEEEET!!!
Sweet!
I just called my mom. She said some of my toys are in the attic. Some??? I think I'm getting my hopes up too high. CURSES!
I know where a lot of my stuff is at my parent's house. The one thing I assume is lost forever, because I've never run across it, is the Dagobah playset. Man, I would love to still have that thing. It was sweet.
