unsocial nerd
Comic book day was today instead of Wednesday like usual (due to the holiday on Monday). As I was walking into the comic book store on my lunchbreak I heard someone yelling at me. I turned around and it was Kup.
I haven't seen Kup for quite a while so I was happy to see him. We chatted for a bit and he followed me into the comic book store.
I tried to talk to him as I browsed the aisles, but all of a sudden I became really self-concious. Not because of the comics. Everybody who knows me knows about my love of comics. And Kup has lived with me a couple of times so he's seen the geekery first hand.
But there was something about someone watching me puruse the new comics that weirded me out. I've been in comic book stores with friends before and it's always kinda like that. I'm never quite able to give the comics or the person I'm with the attention they deserve. I start acting really weird and self-aware. I have no idea what's up with that. Probably some deep, unresolved nerd issues.
Anyway, Kup, if you read this. Sorry dude. It wasn't you.
\\enter nerd talk\\ I can relate. One time Ms. Um went to the comic book store with me, and she seemed pretty uncomfortable. So I had to go through the new releases faster than usual, and we got out of there rather quickly.
Today I went with Clay. He was looking around, but I felt like I needed to hurry for his sake. \\end nerd talk\\
I hate when someone goes in with me and starts asking questions or wants to talk about super heroes. I don't know why, but I just want to push them down and tell them to shut up. It's like if someone tries to talk to you while you're on the toilet.
I have issues, clearly.
Remember at MWK2 when we went to the comic book store? Aquaman was talking loud (as usual) and looking for action figures of himself. The guys in the next room over playing magic thought he had a disability.
That was a little slice of hell for me.
See, for me, my discomfort is completely internal. It's got nothing to do with the Magic nerds. I just don't like you other people in my comic space. Especially trying to make small talk about Green Lantern or something.
Although, you do have to wonder how much of a nerd you must be if the Magic nerds are making fun of you.
Just saying.
Was I the one talking to you about Green Lantern in the store that day? I thought I was wandering the around on my own. Then Aquaman would yell something like, "HEY..I GOT MY OWN COMIC!" or "HEY...CHECK OUT HOW BUFF MY ACTION FIGURE IS!" or "HEY...I'LL NEVER SATISFY A WOMAN EVER AGAIN CAUSE I'M WICKED GAY!"
That "AGAIN" has no place in that sentence.
Yeah, you really rocked everybody's world. Everytime I walk in that store they're still talking about the day the gay mexican guy came in a flittered around talking about Aquaman the whole time.
