column
New column up at the Harlan Daily. It's about Studio 60.
Why you gotta bust balls?
Quote: "My friend Bret has suggested that maybe they're not funny on purpose - that maybe Sorkin is doing a sly backhand at the real “Saturday Night Live” and how limp its comedy writing has been for a few years now. It's a nice theory, but I don't think that's it."
Not only do you hate yourself, but you don't know how to latch on to a good theory either.
Dumbass!
Tonight's episode was a lot better. And by better I mean didn't have any shots of the "show" aside from seeing the very end of the "show".
Except they took us to that comedy club where we were supposed to be impressed by the young, earnest comedic genius in need of refinement - and instead we got 45 seconds of really weak, pointless mumbling while Matthew Perry and D.L. Hughley whispered encouragement from afar.
It's so frustrating! Some parts of the show are so good it hurts! And then other parts are so bad IT HURTS! It's so uneven, it kills me.
Big thanks to the Colonel, though, who sent me links to two different columns where TV critics backed up the opinion from my column. I realize it doesn't take a genuius to realize the sketch comedy stuff isn't funny, but it's nice to know a couple of professionals critics agreed.
Because everyone knows that television critics' opinions are the REALLY important ones...
Think about it, they essentially have to write two shows at the same time. Maybe right now they are working on developing the storyline outside of the show itself and as it gets more established, they will build better skits within the show. For me, I pay very little attention to the actual skits. It's all about the story going on around the show. I am definitely hanging in there. I think it will get better as long as the show makes it. I have a bad habit of latching on to shows that get cancelled. Let's hope this isn't one of them.
It isn't on fox... so that probably won't happen Mrs. Colonel. Fox is the only network that cancels shows after only two or three episodes. Which is a shame, because some of the greatest shows sometimes didn't do very well the whole first season, but went on to have many awesome seasons later. It just seems like networks don't want to fine-tune shows any more, they want them to be instant hits.
