best of 2006: movies
Continuing with the year end best-of-entertainment theme, we move on to movies:

Borat
No doubt Borat will make it onto a lot of these kinds of lists this year. And it should, not only because it was a really funny movie, but because it captured the attention of America in a way that few movies could this year. And, yeah, it was mostly due to controversy, but any press is good press as they say. They, here, being Britney Spears, Paris Hilton, and Lindsey Lohan, but not Tom Cruise or Mark Foley. Sure, Borat was kind of repulsive in places, and definitely not a family movie, but it held a huge mirror up to some really sad, disgusting behavior that takes place in our country on a regular basis. It was a funny movie with a message. The deliverance of that message won't be to everyone's liking, but that's okay.
Brick
The amazing thing about Brick being on this list, is that I only just saw it last night. Sara and I had been looking for a chance to watch it for some time now. She wasn't feeling well last night, so we decided to take it easy with a movie at her house. Man, am I glad we did. What an awesome movie. A murder mystery set in a high school with Chandleresque dialogue. This should be it's own genre. It should be called "Sweet Valley Noir." Brick has a great writing, great acting, and great visuals. It's a genuine tour de force. Whatever that means. I think it has something to do with Star Wars.
Little Miss Sunshine
This movie has the distinction of being one of two movies that have made me cry. I won't spoil it for anyone who hasn't seen it, but the big moment with the brother and the sister really got to me. It's a sweet, funny movie and probably the best thing I saw all year. Steve Carell did a phenomenal job in a part that's the polar opposite of his usual The Office and 40 Year Old Virgin fare. You really need to see this film if you haven't already. If you don't like it, I will refund you the cost of rental. Okay, that's a bold face lie. I won't do that. In all truth, if you don't like it, I will assume you have no soul. That will make you some kind of soul-less monster and I'll probably try and kill you with a crucifix or something. Just a warning.
