studio 60

All the good will I had for the show three weeks ago has evaporated under the weight of sitcom-style comedy and tonight's flashback episode. Man, did it suck. I can imagine the writer's meeting on this one:

"We need to show the audience that Matthew Perry's character is younger in the flashback."

"Okay, well, let's put him in a backwards baseball cap and play Smashmouth and Buck Cherry songs in the background."

"Genius!"

Sheesh...

Yes, the ball cap was silly. Other then that though, it was a super episode. He and Luke had been fighting since day one, and the pressure of his life, you really feel for him taking the drugs...

I don't know, something about it rings kind of hollow to me. Sorkin's two heroes are these paragons of virtue when it comes to being high-minded and erudite on television - but then they both either have or are struggling with drug abuse?

I understand writing what you know and drawing from your own experience, but sometimes it's a little too easy to see behind the curtain with this show.

Also - the "stuck on the roof" and "snake handler" bits from the last two weeks were tiresome and slapsticky.

The show's just so uneven. When it's good, it's great. But when it's bad (which it seems to be more and more these days) it's reeeeally bad.
