check floating: rip

Years ago when I didn't have as tight a hold on my finances as I do these days I used to float checks like crazy. Well, these days I no longer have to do that kind of thing (not because I'm rolling in the dough, but because I just keep better track of my money and keep my bill paying account better funded) - and it's a good thing because according to this article from AOL, check floating has become a thing of the past when dealing with most major retailers.

So be warned - if you tend to write checks knowing that the money may not be there right that moment, but will by the time the check clears, you might be in for a rude awakening.

Quick show of hands: Who still writes checks?

I write one a month.

I write checks for my mortgage and my utilities.

I do online billing with my cell phone. Not sure why I haven't switched the others yet.

I prefer online billing where I decided when the payment is sent. I don't like the automatic withdrawals for some reason.

By my count that is a grand total of ONE!

Spartans!!!!!!!!!!!

After a recount (ahem), that is a grand total of TWO!

(There's a reason I'm registered with the GOP....)

Are you referring to your check writing or mine? Because for me, "utilities" actually means a couple of different services.

I'm referring to the number of *jugheads listed here still writing checks....

*jughead - see "Archie" line of comics....

Aaaaaahhhhh.

I see.

Also, thanks for throwing in the comic reference to try and help me understand.
