donald miller on obama
Just read a really interesting interview with Donald Miller, author of Blue Like Jazz and one of my personal heroes, all about why he's voting for Obama. I'm posting some highlights, but I think it's worth going to this link and reading the whole thing if you've been involved in any discussions about how a person's Christian faith affects their voting in the coming election. I'm not putting these forward as my thoughts. These are Don's. Maybe I agree with them, maybe I don't. That's not the point. The point is that here's an opportunity for you to read some comments from a thoughtful, committed Christian on a challenging topic. Enjoy!
"Today on the news I heard a pastor say you could not possibly be a Christian and vote for Barack Obama. I cringed when I heard it, because yesterday in Colorado I met with about thirty African-American pastors who love Jesus and know Jesus, who will be voting for Barack."
St. Peter:Everything appears in order--you know and love Jesus--that is always good to see as people arrive...
Recently Departed African-American Pastor: Amen and praise be to the Lord Almighty!
St. Peter:Uh oh--not good, not good at all--we've hit a nasty little snag here...
Maybe McCain doesn't have a "better" plan but at least he knows where he stands and is honest about it. Obama has the MOST liberal voting record against abortion, pretty much aproving murder by even the most libral of standards.

Good stuff Patch. THANK YOU for posting. The stuff about who's around when we're on our death bed, priceless!
I wish life were as simple as reading a voting history and ignoring any details that went into each bill. Those things are so clean cut and direct you know! ;)
Ami, I've been kind of following the story that's referenced in that youtube video you posted. From what I've been able to determine Obama didn't approve the bill that came before the Illinois committee because he felt, like the federal version of the bill, that it had language that undermined Roe vs. Wade and because babies born through botched abortions were already protected in Illinois by a law that's been on their books since 1975.
I certainly don't expect anyone who's pro-life to agree with Obama's position on Roe vs. Wade, but the position put forth by Stanek and Hannity that Obama was allowing for infanticide seems baseless.
It should maybe also be pointed out that as recently as 1999 McCain said he wasn't in favor of repealing Roe Vs. Wade. He's obviously changed his mind now.
Thanks for commenting as always. You too Chris and Brian.
1. I could not agree more with his "deathbed" comment. So true...family and friends come first!
2. Being "pro-choice" is not the same thing as being "anti-life." If abortion is criminalized, women who have to make that choice for some unfortunate reason will have a very hard time getting safe medical care...
I don't know what could possibly be "hidden" in a bill that worth a childs life, but I guess some of you are more enlightened than I ;-)
Ami, nobody said the bills had anything "hidden" in them. And nobody said the things in the bills were worth a baby's life. Simply that there's more to the story than the final vote - as I tried to show.
I really think discussions like this are good and useful but let's be careful that we don't misrepresent other people's positions.
Love you all. Thanks for taking part.
Great point! And no offense meant on my part. I love the conversation aspect of blogging especially amongst a circle of people that know each other. Even though we don't always agree and sometimes interpret things differently.

On the issue of abortion, he is the only candidate who has a plan to reduce the number of abortions. John McCain's only plan is the same old trick: say that you are pro life and offer no plan at all other than to criminalize abortion. I simply think that plan hasn't worked, and we have to face that fact and look for other ways to make progress.
I do wish Obama were pro-life. His plan to reduce the rate of abortion is a great step for the party, but I also wish he would defend the unborn to a greater degree.
Today on the news I heard a pastor say you could not possibly be a Christian and vote for Barack Obama. I cringed when I heard it, because yesterday in Colorado I met with about thirty African-American pastors who love Jesus and know Jesus, who will be voting for Barack. I wondered what they might think when they hear something like that, an angry white man telling them they do not know Jesus, and that they are going to hell.
Many of my friends will vote for McCain, and members of my family too. But it doesn't matter to me. Family comes first, and so do friends. When I'm on my deathbed, Barack Obama and John McCain won't be there, but my friends and family will. So they come first, and they are more important.
